Position description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at 91°µÍø invites applications to teach DATA 3101 Data Acquisition and Organization in Fall 2026. This is a stipendiary (part-time) appointment to be offered at 91°µÍø in Sackville. Candidates must have an MSc or PhD in an appropriate field, with a PhD preferred, and be able to show a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.  Candidates must also have strong coding skills in R or Python.

The Fall term begins September 8th and concludes December 3rd, with the exam period to follow.  This course is scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00–11:20 am.  Ideally, the instructor would be in Sackville to teach both classes in person; however, we would be willing to consider having one class per week in person and the other online to make it more possible for candidates who do not live in Sackville.  Anticipated enrolment is 15 students.

This is an inter-disciplinary course with broad pre-requisites that draws students from a wide variety of majors.  The Calendar description for this course is as follows:

This course covers high throughput acquisition and management of data. The course will use diverse data types and formats to illustrate conceptual challenges across disciplines. Technical aspects will include evolving approaches to script-based web scraping, file formats and conversions, data mergers and tidying, meta-data organization and capture. In parallel, the course will cover theoretical and ethical aspects of data curation and access policies, development of best practices for research data management and case studies in secure management of sensitive or private data.

More information on the Data Science program and courses is available at  /academic_calendar/25-26/DataScience.html.

Applications should include a cover letter and curriculum vitae, with names and contact information of references, and should be sent to math@mta.ca (PDF preferred).  In their cover letter, applicants should comment on their experience and preparedness for teaching this course. Cover letters should be addressed to:

Dr. M. Hamilton, Chair of the Search Committee,
Dept. of Mathematics and Computer Science,

Review of applications will begin June 10th, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.
